In the past few hours, they announced that they have signed their young forward Quinton Byfield. This is a 5-year contract extension with an annual value of $6.25 million per year:
Byfield was the player everyone compared to Juraj Slafkovsky, being a 2nd overall pick in 2020 (behind Alexis Lafrenière).
Byfield's contract was set to greatly influence Slafkovsky's, but Kent Hughes did not wait and managed to sign the young Slovakian forward before the Los Angeles Kings did with Byfield.
He did very well!
Quinton Byfield, 6 feet 5 inches and 225 pounds, was a 2nd overall pick in 2020. He has accumulated 10 points in 40 games and 55 points in 80 games during his first seasons in the NHL.
Juraj Slafkovsky, 6 feet 4 inches and 225 pounds, was a 1st overall pick in 2022. He has accumulated 10 points in 39 games and 50 points in 82 games during his first seasons in the NHL.
Yes, they have extremely similar profiles.
Slafkovsky, however, has an advantage over Byfield because he reached these milestones at a younger age.
Now that we know the Kings could only secure a five-season contract with their young forward, we realize once again how incredibly well Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens negotiated.
Hughes managed to secure three additional big years with a player in his prime for only an extra $1.3 million per year.
This is very solid, especially considering Montreal's situation (versus Los Angeles) with the climate, taxes, and all.
There's more.
At the end of his contract, Quinton Byfield will be free as a bird and able to become a free agent at 26! It would have been bad news to see Juraj Slafkovsky follow suit, so once again, what a job by Kent Hughes!
We can have Slafkovsky in Montreal for even longer.
Clearly, especially following this major announcement from the Kings, we realize that Juraj Slafkovsky's contract extension is a huge win for Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens. We love it.
