According to Sportico's new assessment of the value of NHL franchises, the Montreal Canadiens' value has literally exploded this year.
The Tricolore and the Bell Centre are now valued at US$1.7 billion, an 8% increase from last year.
The Molson family and its partners acquired the organization in 2009 for an estimated US$575 million.
The Canadiens' revenues were US$257 million in 2021-2022, a significant increase compared to 2020-2021 which was only US$91 million, but that was a season obviously disrupted by the pandemic. In 2019-2020, the CH's revenues were still US$232M.
In the ranking of total NHL franchise values, the Canadiens are behind the Toronto Maple Leafs (US$2.12B) and the New York Rangers (US$2.01B). The Chicago Blackhawks (US$1.44 billion) and the Boston Bruins (US$1.41 billion) round out the top five.
Not surprisingly, the Arizona Coyotes come in last with a total value of US$465 million.
