It seems that after three decades of professional hockey, Jaromir Jagr is about to hang up his skates.
In a recent interview in the Czech Republic with iDNEZ.cz, Jagr, now 50, shared that he is not currently playing and has no plans to return to the ice.
In recent years, Jagr has played for the Kladno Knights, the team he owns in the Czech League. But after years of playing, the hockey legend now shares that he has no desire to play at the moment.
Jagr admitted at this point that he is essentially retired. However, he could still strap on the skates one last time to play in the annual Czech League winter classic. The game is scheduled for December after being cancelled the past two years.
Last August, Jagr admitted to himself that he no longer felt physically ready to play. It seems that Jagr's love for the game is no longer enough to keep him going. After 32 years on the ice, it's hard to blame him for wanting to take some time for himself.
"Not at all. I love hockey, but it's hard work. Physically it's very demanding.
At my age, playing at a certain level is a challenge in itself. Getting ready, getting motivated. Not to mention the need for rest. Because of the time spent on the ice and in meetings, I don't have time to take care of myself between nine and two in the afternoon. Going to practice tired and being physically tired, I can't do it, I won't do it."
If Jagr really does retire, he can finally be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. There is no doubt that with the career he has had, he will be admitted at the first opportunity, he comes second in NHL history with 1,921 points, behind Wayne Gretzky.
