As we reported in the last few hours, we have seen a twist in the NHL waivers, as forward Jakub Vrana is currently available for free.

This is a solid opportunity for Kent Hughes and his counterparts to add a 26 year old player with the potential to score 70-80 points per season for free.

This is so surprising that many fans are wondering if there is a "hidden vice", but TSN's Chris Johnston just gave the answer.

"Chris Johnston on Insider Trading says the reason the Red Wings placed forward Jakub Vrana on waivers is because they are facing pressure with their lineup (a surplus) with forward Robby Fabbri returning to the lineup and forward Tyler Bertuzzi returning soon.

Vrana is perfectly healthy right now and is ready to play right now."

Basically, according to Johnston's information, the Red Wings would have simply placed Vrana on waivers so they could make room in their lineup. They preferred Fabbri and Bertuzzi, over Vrana.

Vrana is ready to play and ready to perform.

The only "hitch" is his $5.25 million annual salary for another year and a half, but for a player who can put up 70-80 points and is only 26 years old, it could be worth it.

If it was your decision, would you claim Vrana? It could make for a solid top-6 winger who is only 26 years old. It might be tempting to replace an Evgenii Dadonov or Joel Armia with Vrana.

Please note that the Montreal Canadiens currently have the sixth right (out of 32) to claim players from waivers.
