Significant trade finalized between the Montreal Canadiens and the Vegas Golden Knights last year: Kent Hughes' notable transaction according to Arpon Basu
BY ELIAS AUGUST 31, 2023 (1:43 PM)
During his very first segment on the show with Georges Laraque and Stéphane Gonzalez, Basu revealed what he believes is Kent Hughes' most significant trade.
The answer might surprise many, but there's logic behind it.
There were options.
He could have mentioned the acquisition of Kirby Dach, the acquisition of Mike Matheson, the acquisition of Alex Newhook, the three-way trade with the Pittsburgh Penguins and the San Jose Sharks, and much more.
His answer? The trade concluded with the Vegas Golden Knights involving Shea Weber.
Indeed, let's recall that on June 16, 2022, Kent Hughes traded Weber to Vegas in exchange for Evgeny Dadonov (who later became Denis Gurianov).
Even if Dadonov and Gurianov didn't perform as hoped in Montreal, Basu is convinced that trading Weber was a smart move.
He particularly explains how crucial it was for the financial future of the organization to be able to trade Weber's hefty contract. (even if he's injured) It was a solid move by Kent Hughes.
Having the contracts of Weber and Carey Price was a significant issue and could have become a big problem.
