As some concerns begin to surface about the possibility of losing Cole Caufield through an offer sheet, reputed Darren Dreger has now stepped in.

According to the well-known insider, with solid contacts in the NHL, one should not expect to see Caufield receive an offer sheet.

He made a very clear statement on this matter this morning:

It should be noted that Caufield has never hidden his desire to stay in Montreal long term, and Kent Hughes has never hidden his desire to keep Caufield in Montreal long term.

So it would be an extremely bold move for an NHL team to try to get involved.

A team makes an offer sheet when they have serious reasons to believe it can work. The game must be worth the candle.

Here, no NHL team has any reason to believe that the Canadiens would let Caufield go via an offer sheet.

Charles-Alexis Brisebois sums it up very well here:

"Honestly, a GM doesn't want to make an offer sheet knowing that he won't be able to sign the player. Why? Because an offer sheet leaves traces with other executives.

Remember that Marc Bergevin, in 2020, had not made an offer sheet to Pierre-Luc Dubois because Columbus had made room to keep him. You don't make an offer without having reasons to believe that it will work."

This is obviously reassuring.

Caufield, 22 years old, has amassed 36 points (26 goals) in 46 games this season with the Montreal Canadiens. He is a restricted free agent.
