Curious last-minute statement from the Canadiens regarding another upcoming trade
BY JULIEN TREKKER AUGUST 16, 2023 (11:46)
It pertains to the decision to start the season with goaltender Carey Price in the official lineup (under his contract), which would provide much more flexibility to the Canadiens this season.
Essentially, by doing this and then subsequently placing Carey Price on the regular season LTIR (Long-Term Injured Reserve), rather than currently placing him on the off-season LTIR, everything changes, and it's truly advantageous for Kent Hughes.
However, right now, the mathematics aren't aligning.
To achieve this and include Carey in the lineup to start the season, the Canadiens need to free up about $3.7 million from their salary cap.
How does Kent Hughes plan to accomplish this?
This is where it becomes very intriguing. See what he said on the matter.
"There are certain things in progress that I can't discuss today, but we believe that with that, we'll be able to avoid placing Carey on the off-season long-term injured reserve (and thus, free up the necessary money.)"

Interesting! You can guess that this has sparked a lot of speculation, but unsurprisingly, something tells us that the GM is working on another trade.
"Hughes definitely gave us a hint about another trade or two to come, aimed at creating cap space."

It apparently involves goaltender Casey DeSmith.
