Especially in the last few weeks, there is a lot of negativity for the Montreal Canadiens, but since the beginning of the season, we have a huge positive and extremely encouraging point for the future: the holding of Cole Caufield as well as Nick Suzuki.

The two youngsters form one of the most dangerous duos in the entire NHL, and they score an abnormally high percentage of their team's goals.

They are (both) on a 70 point per season pace, and they were even on a 90 point per 82 game pace before their most recent greedy stint.

A controversial statement

According to analyst Simon Boisvert, a top line that includes Suzuki and Caufield won't be enough to even hope to get close to the Stanley Cup in the next few years.

According to what he mentioned during his most recent appearance on Tony Marinaro's excellent podcast, The Sick Podcast, Boisvert said that Caufield and Suzuki wouldn't even be on a first trio of a contending team.

"Having Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield on a first trio is fine for a rebuilding or mid-pack team. But to aspire to the Stanley Cup, they'll have to be second-line players because the Habs have managed to build a better first line. If they play on a second trio, the Habs would definitely be a top contender." - Simon Boisvert

Ouch. Do you feel the same way?

Honestly, we respect his opinion, but it's worth mentioning that Suzuki and Caufield are only 23 and 22 years old. They are just beginning to show their full potential.

Let's also add that Suzuki is already recognized as a true all-around player, good in his zone, capable of eventually amassing 35 goals and 85 points per season. (12 goals and 24 points in his first 21 games of the season)

As for Caufield, he has scored 45 goals in his last 78 games and clearly has the potential to score 50 per season. Again, what more could you ask for in a first line player?
