Cheated parents years Johnson strong gesture keeping promise former coach

CHEATED BY HIS PARENTS A FEW YEARS AGO, JACK JOHNSON HAS JUST MADE A STRONG GESTURE AND IS KEEPING HIS PROMISE TO HIS FORMER COACH

The 2021-22 NHL season has been full of stories for Jack Johnson.

It started with turning a tryout contract into a full season contract in which he got to play his 1,000th NHL game. Then, he became a regular contributor on the blue line and eventually made it to the Stanley Cup Final for the first time in his 16-year career.

Along with his hockey career, he also achieved a lifelong goal of graduating from the University of Michigan.

Johnson revealed before Game 2 in Denver that he finished his general education program at Michigan this spring, nearly two decades after he began his college career with the school. At the time, he had quickly become one of the top prospects in the league and turned pro after his second college season with the Los Angeles Kings. He had to stop his studies, much to his dismay.

"It took me what, 18 years? Most people are doctors after that many years of school!" the burly defenseman joked. "In seasons when my team wasn't in the playoffs, I would enroll in the spring semester from a distance. I also took advantage of the pandemic to do classes online that were normally offered on campus." - Jack Johnson

It's something he's very proud of, especially as someone who grew up idolizing the school and its hockey program.

"It was my dream to play hockey at the University of Michigan and I wanted to graduate from this school. It's the highest ranked public university in the country. When I left school, I promised Red Berenson [the head coach at the time] that I would finish my degree and I called him as soon as I completed it." - Jack Johnson

While he has his degree, the only thing Jack is missing now is the Stanley Cup. He truly deserves it when you consider what the veteran defenseman has gone through in his career. If on the hockey level he has had a rough couple of years, he had only played 30 games in the playoffs before this season, it is on the personal level that the worst has happened.

He was financially cheated by his parents eight years ago. At that time, he accused his parents of mismanaging his finances, spending too much on cars, jewelry and extending lines of credit that plunged him into millions of dollars of debt. He had been forced to file for bankruptcy in October 2014, even though he had earned more than $20 million in his career by then.

Johnson is quite the role model for resilience and perseverance! Well done Jack for getting through it all!
