BY DAVID ST-JEAN    JULY 20, 2023  (11:59)
In the last few hours, former Montreal Canadiens player Nate Thompson took us by surprise by announcing his retirement from the NHL during a live podcast.

He simply made the statement during a conversation with the host:

"I will no longer play (hockey in the NHL). I am retiring." - Nate Thompson

The host responded with excitement:

"Wow. Did we just get a breaking news exclusive? Did you just...?"

Thompson confirmed that he had never officially announced it before, so yes, that's how he confirmed the news.

We love it, and it speaks volumes about him and the down-to-earth person he is.

The two podcast hosts were thrilled to have this exclusive news.

A beautiful little moment!

So, Thompson, a former player much loved by Montreal Canadiens fans, announced his retirement from hockey at the age of 38.

Nate Thompson played for the Habs during the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons.

Throughout his NHL career, the forward accumulated 164 points in 844 games.

He concluded his career with the Ontario Reign, the Los Angeles Kings' AHL affiliate, last season.
