A young forward from the Maple Leafs about to announce his retirement and the end of his career? An update on the young Rodion Amirov

BY DAVID ST-JEAN    JULY 25, 2023  (9:33)
During the 2020 NHL Draft, with the 15th overall pick, just ahead of the Montreal Canadiens' selection of Kaiden Guhle (16th overall), the Toronto Maple Leafs drafted the dynamic young forward Rodion Amirov.

He was expected to become their top prospect and a future dominant forward for the team. This would have been significant for Toronto, as having a young, dominant forward on his entry-level NHL contract for less than a million dollars would have been extremely valuable, given their high-salaried players.

Terrible News for Amirov

In early 2022, young Amirov was diagnosed with a brain tumor and was sent to Germany for treatment. This was devastating news.

At that point, there was still hope that he could eventually return to Toronto and miraculously resume his NHL career. He even believed he could attempt a comeback in November.

However, in the past few hours, when asked about the situation, journalist Kyle Cushman made the following announcement. He suggests that the 21-year-old's career might actually be over, unfortunately.

"Amirov extended his loan with Salavat Yulaev Ufa in May, but there's been no legitimate indication that he'll return to play.

The loan is so Amirov can remain in Russia, have access to Ufa's staff, and be around the team. With what's public, it's unlikely he plays again."

This is truly sad, and of course, the main concern remains Amirov's health.

Fighting a brain tumor is unimaginable at any age, let alone at 21.

We hope for the best for the young player, that he will recover and be able to lead a normal life at some point, even if a hockey career is no longer possible in his case based on what we understand here.

Wishing a speedy recovery and sincerely hoping for the best possible life for young Amirov, with as few limitations as possible.
