A nice unexpected Christmas gift for Habs fans today

Many fans would have liked to see the CH win Friday night in Dallas to start the Christmas break the right way. However, the Montreal club unknowingly gave itself a nice gift with this regulation time loss.

Montreal is now 7th and second to last in the Atlantic Division with a 15-16-3 record, 9 points out of a playoff spot. The CH is also the 8th worst team in the NHL, which will help with the draft lottery.

As Marc-Olivier Beaudoin reminds us, it wasn't just good for the CH's pick, it was good for the Panthers' pick (which also belongs to Kent Hughes). With their 5-1 loss to the Islanders on Friday night, the Panthers are now 8 points out of a playoff spot.

It was completely unexpected, but the Panthers are also giving the Habs a gift!

The way the Panthers are playing right now, it wouldn't be surprising to see them slip further down the standings. They are 3-7-0 in their last ten games and the frustration is showing. You have to think that GM Bill Zito certainly didn't expect this kind of start to the season when he acquired Ben Chiarot for an unprotected 1st round pick...

Imagine if this pick was finally in the top-10 or even top-5! A file to follow...
